Belbin's 9 Team Roles
Research showed that the most successful teams were made up of a diverse mix of behaviours; they had access to all nine Belbin Team Roles.
This doesn't mean that every team requires nine people! Most people will have two or three Team Roles that they are most comfortable with.
There are no good or bad Team Roles. Each Team Role has it's strengths and weaknesses, and each has equal importance. However, not all are required at the same time - it is important to first look at the team objectives, and work out which tasks need to be undertaken. Once this has been done, discussions can take place regarding which and when each Team Role behaviour should be utilised.
None of this is possible without an individual completing a Belbin Self-Perception Inventory and asking for feedback from their colleagues. The Belbin Report that is produced will help pin-point individual strengths to communicate and share with the rest of the team.
Video Clips: "What is Belbin?"
Each Team Role Type and its associated icon represents a distinctive cluster of behaviours
that occur when people interact, contribute and operate with one another.
Completing a Belbin profile enables these to be measured. A profile can be composed from
both a persons "Self Perception" and from adding "Observers" to provide valuable 360
degree feedback. A wide range of insightful reports (see downloads to the right) can be
generated once the basic profiles are captured.
People are not just one Team Role Type, but rather have varied combinations of "Natural",
"Manageable" and "Least Preferred" Roles. Their own unique combination will provide
deep insight into their preferred operating style as a team member or leader and how
they will interact with others when at their best, and also how their weaknesses manifest
Each Team Role has "Contributions" that represent the strengths of the Role as well as
"Allowable Weaknesses" that will also occur. Below are some brief descriptions of each
Team Role Type.
Accreditation is NOT mandatory to use Belbin, but is recommended and useful
for those planning to use the Model at depth. We can also run simple "How To"
sessions to get you and your people up to speed on the Model, Profiles and Reports.
