In teams, we often emphasise strengths—identifying what each person brings to the table through tools like Belbin Team Roles. But there’s a subtler, often overlooked skill that defines truly effective team players and leaders: restraint.

 

Dr. Meredith Belbin captured this important aspect of self-awreness in teams beautifully when he said,

 

“The art of self-management lies in knowing what to do and what not to do. The not doing is the most neglected part of the art.”

 

It’s a powerful reminder that being effective in a team is not just about stepping up—it's also about stepping back when our contribution is not needed or will clash with that of another.


Knowing your Belbin Team Role gives you deeper insight into where you’re likely to add the most value. But mature team behaviour requires something more: the self-awareness and ego control to recognise when not to contribute speak, when not to challenge others, and when not to push your own perspective.  There are times when it’s optimal to do so, but critical to recognise that if ill-timed we can clash with or shut down others.

 

This doesn’t mean being passive. It means knowing that restraint is sometimes the most constructive action. In high-performing, cross-functional teams—especially in agile or fast-paced environments—people who constantly assert their strengths can inadvertently create friction, exacerbate biases or undermine collaboration.

 

The Stoic philosopher Epictetus once said,

 

“We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak.”

This reflects the same principle as Belbin’s: true effectiveness in a team comes from discipline, not dominance.

 

Ironically, it often takes more confidence and emotional intelligence to not contribute than to speak up. Choosing silence when another team member is in their element, or resisting the urge to compete for the spotlight, allows space for diversity of thought and stronger outcomes.

 

So as you reflect on your team role strengths, also ask yourself: When is it better to step back? Because sometimes, the greatest contribution you can make is the one you choose not to make.
