Belbin: A Human Advantage Framework for the Age of AI

Teams and AI with the Belbin Model.

AI is becoming a powerful engine inside modern workplaces, but the human team is essential to help control and use that engine. Belbin helps teams to manage AI.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the way that organisations work. From data analysis and automation to predictive decision-making, While the technology is evolving at remarkable speed, one fundamental truth remains unchanged: organisational success still depends on how well people work together.

Successful teams rely on a range of complementary behaviours, many of these AI cannot replicate. I like the engine in the boat metaphor. AI is like adding a more powerful and faster engine to a boat. Unless you maintain a great crew to navigate and manage the boat, then that engine may just help to bring about a faster crash onto the rocks.

In fact, the rise of AI may just make effective teamwork more important than ever in this regard.

As technology accelerates the pace of work and increases the amount of information that teams must process, organisations need something that AI cannot provide on its own: human judgement, collaboration, and balanced behavioural contributions.

This is where the Belbin Team Roles framework becomes particularly relevant.

Belbin can be understood as a Human Advantage Framework for the Age of AI, helping teams identify, work with and balance these behavioural strengths required for high performance.

These human capabilities, ‘human superpowers’, allow a team to better manage that faster engine in the boat, build a better ‘crew’ and help prevent a potentially faster crash.  Amongst these human behavioural contributions are…

Human Thinking Power:

Generating and then developing ideas and exploring possibilities. Roles such as the Plant, Resource Investigator, and Specialist bring imagination, curiosity, and human expertise to the table. While AI can analyse existing data, it is human creativity, curiosity and experience that often spark genuinely new opportunities and innovations.

Judgement and Direction:

Ideas need to be evaluated and aligned with organisational goals. The Monitor Evaluator, Coordinator, and Shaper help teams make sense of complexity, clarify priorities, and maintain forward momentum. AI may help research and generate masses of options, but it is human teams should ultimately decide what actions to take.

Execution and Collaboration:

Teams must transform ideas and plans into results. Roles such as the Implementer, Teamworker, and Completer Finisher ensure that work is carried through efficiently and to a high standard.

These behaviours maintain reliability, harmony and quality within the team.

The power of Belbin lies in helping teams to understand that performance does not come from any ‘engine’ alone, nor individuals trying to be good at everything. Instead, it emerges when different strengths are recognised and combined in a balanced way to harness emerging technology and embrace those human superpowers.

In the age of artificial intelligence, technology may accelerate performance and the potential speed of that metaphorical ‘boat’. But it is the human advantage, creativity, judgement, and collaboration that ultimately determines success and avoids it crashing into the rocks.

Belbin helps teams to manage the powerful engine of AI.
